PiranhasThe creature of myth and legend, the stuff of nightmares, the subject of Hollywood B horror movies and the fish synonymous with the word Amazon.
Well the truth of the matter is they are not as bad as they are painted. In rare circumstances of course they will attack, the most dangerous being the small Red Bellied Piranha (usually in large shoals) especially in low water conditions when they are confined to ever shrinking forest pools.
It is somewhat gratifying to know in the Agua Boa we do not appear to have this particular species though they can be found at the confluence with the Rio Branco. We do however have a number of other species including the Large Black Piranha. I have to say all species love our Peacock Bass flies and even our fly lines.
It is a known fact that most accidents occur whilst handling or should I say mishandling the fish when the angler gets the fish into the boat. Do not fool around with Piranhas.
